Yeah Bill, It would have been tough for you back then, trying to keep out of trouble with all the then new up and coming troublemaker young offenders and the older boys yard kids. a lot of them ended up in the pen , because they were to hard to handle and they were to bad for Turana YTC. and places like Morning Star and the Salvo,s boys homes, which used to still use sodomy and the bash back then as discipline. Then there was the sharpies and the Melbourne Northern suburbs, Broady boys and Thomastown , Brunswick, Coburg, Collingwood, Richmond and other juvenile delinquents , just like the youngens do today. Young Mark Read, back then, would of been one of them trouble makers, trying to make a name for himself. Many of the old time crims hated him, he was a firecracker and was favoured by some of the screws, so he would do there dirty work for them.Chopper was a real problem gladiator then back in the seventies. That’s why the screws kept him in H.Division, for his own good and keep him out of circulation, as he was a violent physio . But I guess in his situation he had to be back then to get his respect, or himself be bashed, stabbed, raped or killed, with no protection from the main stream gaol,hey. The inmates of your era were in a hell hole doing stir in Pentridge in the seventies. No protection back then in the gladiator school. Instead of locking them away and throwing away the bloody key on these maggots, the do-gooders are giving them another chance, to go back on the streets and un-supervised, to be predators, all over again, back on our streets. ITS TIME the government got a large block of land in the middle of the desert, and filled it with thousands of cheap second hand shipping containers, with only the basics, a bed bunks and a communal toilet blocks and cold showers to wash the fithy scum bags. And wrap the whole prison up with rolls and rolls of razor sharpe razor wire and a high voltage electric electrified fence to make escapes, near impossible to escape from, with out death or serious injury to deter them. These monsters all belong in the garbage bin, and don’t ever deserve anymore mercy or rehabilitation from the powers that be in the justice department. Prison for these dogs should be real tough, mean conditions of prison. With only one way out of prison. No parole ever, no exceptions. Only punishment by being left to fend for themselves in their shipping containers, where they can catch and kill there own in their new gladiator pits, to rot in hell, and only get out in a coffin…………….

Your right Bill, There used to be a heap of photographs hanging in the Governors offices at the main gate of Pentridge of French Island, penal camp. Looked like a harsh remote place. More like a old convict settlement. I had heard the screws there were bent drongos. Probably sent there for bad behaviour, a lot of the screws were often drunk on duty, and many as like the old H.Division screws, just hated all crims, and some of them were former world war two, ex servicemen, that had been and seen some horrible things that the Japs used to do to the Australian Prisoners of war in Changi and other Jap prison camps, so they were very hardened disciplined basher and kangaroo court officers in your time in gaol. You are right Bill the horrible crimes were just as bad in the past. As far back as the Squizzy Taylor days in Melbourne. In your day it was Bobby Barron, and all the Derek percy. child abductions and mysterious murders, like the Beaumont Children and many more un-solved cases,of the 1960,s and 1970,s. Pentridge and the other High Security Gaols Victorian gaols were a breeding ground full of some of some very dangerous stone cold evil killers and rapists . In my time as a screw it was Peter Dupas, Raymond mr stinky Edmonds, Juilian Knight, Jimmy Bazely, Greg Brazel, Gary David Webb, Steven Hunter, Peter Vaitos , Keithy Faure, and many many more, that used to scare the daylights out of me, after they were locked in their cells for the night, and I was patrolling around the cell blocks and the old cell door large padlocks and trap locks, checking no one was trying to escape from the divisions or over the walls, in the silent of the night, while I was on night watch in Pentridge, and there were many attempts at breaking out in my time there. Bars cut out of the cell blocks and tunnels dug from one cell to another and paper mache patched up and painted over, hundreds of jail made weapons, digging and escape tools always being found hidden on the cell searches and tier ramps. And all the more, worrying knowing their crimes they had been locked up for. The escape that Steven Hunter planned and got over the 5 post wall with three rolls of razor wire, was really well planned and executed. Also Raymond mr stinky Edmonds neally got as far as from J.Division all the way to the South gate of D.Division, and nearly never got caught. And there was Chopper Read and jimmy Loughnan, who once got onto the A.Division roof and in another attempt got into the B.Division roof space and hid there, but got found out,before he could get to the outside wall of the muster yard. And you were saying Bill that Gordon Sammy Hutchinson, escaped four times. There must be some old Pentridge Records reports hidding away on these escapes somewhere in the Governments archives.
And today their are still ever growing bad evil cold blooded killing bastards filling the jails, like todays killer crims, Christopher Wayne Hudson, Victor Brincatt, Adrian Bayley, Matthew Johnson, Prisoners of War Gang. And for the safety of the community more modern prisons are going to have to be kept getting built, just like in the U.S.A…….Being a screw, or Corrections Officer in todays jails is to hard with all the drug, crazy addicted crims. They have to many rights, thanks to the do-gooders, and they have it to easy nowdays in the nick. That’s why the drugs run every thing in and out of jail today. The system is to weak, and the crims just keep coming back, rather than live in the high cost of living outside world. The modern jails are no deterent to crime, with their modern comforts, airconditioned cells, good choice of meals, showers in cells, pay tv.
Not freezing cold or sweating hot and just a shit can, like the old gaols, and often a a shortage of meals and just bugoo, porridge, toast and a sav in bread.!…….

Thanks Bill, it is very interesting to hear about these long forgotten gaol escapes, and cover ups, It was the same with Ronald Ryan and Peter Walker, they were restless on being locked up in Pentridge and didn’t like spending years in stir, and so nothing was going to stop their desperate attempt to break out. Had hey picked a less secure part of Pentridge instead of 2 and 1 post towers they may have got away more quietly, without all the maingate screws charging at them. And also Prison Officer Hodson, would not of been in the line of fire of Prison Officer Langers stray bullet, while aiming to shoot Ronny Ryan. Such a waste of lives on all sides. Even Though I am a former Screw, and was firm but fair and reaIly don’t like many of the tough crims, I really feel sorry for what happened to Ronald Ryan, in regards to him being Hanged. Henry Bolte was determined to set an example of Ryan. Peter Walker was perhaps more deserving of the noose than Ryan. Especially as Screws and the Police covered up that the semi automatic rifle that ryan took from the B.Division 1 Post Tower screw, was jammed and a bullet was ejected on to road when he tried to cock the bolt. Also the bullet that killed Officer Hodson was most likely fired from the Pentridge Main Gate by a accidental shot. Had Ryan not tried to escape he would possibly finished his sentence and released from Pentridge and lived to old age. But a Prison Officer was killed because of Ryans and Walkers escape, because of friendly fire or not, the truth may never be known. And Peter Walker did shot his victim tow truck driver Arthur Henderson, while on the run, because he reckons he was going to give him and Ryan up. Peter Walker when he was captured and returned back to Pentridge and sent down to H.Division, for punishment in the old slot ,was to serve worst time, in the hell hole bash house, and the tough B.Division for years, before his was released in around 1984. Peter Walker never got into crime again, and I think he is still alive and lives in Kyneton, country Victoria. Its a pity Ronald Ryan wasn’t sentence to life back then in 1967. He would have been let out of prison years ago on parole, and would have been able to give his version of the events of that 1966 Christmas Day Pentridge escape, and even have wrote a book on his life. Did you ever get locked up in C.Division bill. When I was a screw at Pentridge it had been demolished in 1973, and was in my time named Pentridge Square and was fenced off as the exercise yard or as the prisoners called it the Chook Pen. It was used by the un-employed management problem crims of B.Division and E.Division Dorms Young Offenders to pen them and keep a close watch on them. All they did was pump weights and run around the cage or pace it all day. They were locked in the Chook Pen from 8.00am muster, till lunch muster and again locked up until 3.30 pm meal time, then locked in the large old B.Division mess hall, which was always having a riot in it, because their was never enough food to go around all the B.Divison crims back then. And many of the heavy prisoners used to standover the newer prisoners and take their meals. Porridge or burgoo and toast was the chefs issued meals, most of the time. Occasionally on weekends they got a four and twenty pie for a luxury, and There had to be a few screws watching over the meal billets to make sure every prisoner only got one serve of the meals dished out, before the 4.00pm muster and then they were let out of the locked mess hall and locked in their cells at 4.15pm. How did you compare French Island to Pentridge bill in the 1960,s and 1972, Bill. One more Question Bill , did you know of the reputation by the prisoners of Prison Officer Colin Wood, or Woody as he was better known. He was my Governor in 1989. And had served as a screw at Pentridge for 50 years. And his father before him was also a screw in Pentridge for many years before him. He once said that the prisoners had to once were calico hoods over their heads and had to look to the ground and not speak, when a screw, warder or turnkey as they were then known. let then in and out of the cells and down the tiers. And they used to move the prisoners from one division to another by a underground tunnels and they were kept in under ground dungeons in all the divisions for bad behaviour and punishment. And the only exercise they got was hard labour on work gangs and crushing rocks, and they only got a break to pace up and down a circular, divided bluestone cages, one prisoner at a time., for 30 minutes, then locked back in their cells. I can still remember the dungeon in B.Division. But it was locked up in 1989 and never used. Most of all the other dungeons and tunnels under Pentridge had been filled in. He died still working on his post in Pentridge in 1990. He was a very tough, hard Prison Officer even on the other screws, and ruled with a iron fist, and was as tough as nails on every body and he hated all the crims, and was the Governor in charge of the Pentridge Main Gates. That is the area where the big famous tower with the crosses built into it is, in the front of Pentridge……Cheers Bill, thanks for sharing your experiences., a lot of the readers should find this very interesting. Its good to write about this fast fading history, as the old prisons are all now long closed, and most of their harsh, tough stories are being lost forever and haven’t been recorded for history…………………..
One only has to visit the Old Melbourne Gaol, or Tasmainias Port Arthur convict Gaol, any day of the week, to see how many people are interested in our Australia Penal Servitude past………..
